If the system firmware has not been updated yet, then maybe you can get Apple or an AASP to update it for you. As long as it is macOS 10.13+, then chances are the system firmware has already been updated and will work with an OWC SSD (you can leave the SSD removed for this test). Try booting the Mac Pro using Recovery Mode (Command + R) and see which version of macOS it will install.

The NVMe SSD also needs the NVMe driver which is only available with macOS 1013+. NVMe SSDs use a different protocol which is only available after the system has had the macOS 10.13+ system firmware installed. OWC sells NVMe SSDs which can be 2x to 3x the speed of the SATA SSD. The original Apple SSD is actually a SATA based SSD. OWC is your safest option for a third party SSD as they do support their products when Apple does something to "break" them. You can either pay Apple's price for a replacement Apple SSD or you can purchase a third party SSD. If Apple says it is defective, then you need to replace the SSD with another one. I don't have SSD enclosure to try to mount it externally to some other Mac. Is it possible that this computer was never updated and due to the fact that they have wiped the drive it is not capable to recognize 1TB? If SSD is utterly dead it should show no sign of life but somehow it does.

So it looks like you are saying that I should buy new ssd?Ĭurrently it has Samsung MZ-KPU1TOT/OA1. Is there a way to fix it? I assume, best guess, probably not but it is interesting how it appears and dissapears. It wouldn't update security update (keeps saying hard drive has not been ejected properly).Īnyways took it to Apple store, they run diagnostics and stated that everything is great except it came out that ssd failed. At one point I had somehow managed to format it, at least it appeared to do so but could not install OS because it would get disconnected or dissapear when selecting Drive to install OS.So I decided to use external HDD to install Maverick Is, it did it thing, managed to restart few time while it got updated to latest security updates but at some point again security update got stuck. I was told SSD was wiped.Īt the begining I could see SSD but couldn't format it, eventually it disappeared and I couldn't not see it in utility.
